Each summer nearly 9,000 youth and their families travel from all over the United States to compete in the National Championship held each July in Marengo Ohio. The youth compete in various types of shooting sports from Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays in the Scholastic Clay Target Program. To rifle and pistol shooting in the Scholastic Action Shooting Program. In just eight days more than 2,000,000 clay targets are thrown specifically for school aged youth. They travel from all corners of the United States and develop friendships and rivalries with their peers that continue year after year.
Our team, the Castlewood Clay Crushers, have only begun traveling to this event in the last four years but have created quite a reputation for “the little club that could”. This year we sent the most competitors we ever have. Although 21 individuals does seem like a lot, when only four years ago we had 3 youth at nationals, there are many teams that send 50 or more participants. The youth participation is based on individual and team scores which are based on their age, experience level and gender. The participants are broken up into six divisions. This year all our youth performed very well earning a 6th place finish in Entry Intermediate Squad out of 23. A 16th place finish in Intermediate Advanced Squad out of 44. A 21st & 31st place finish in Junior Varsity out of 55 squads. A 39th & 160th place finish in Senior Varsity out of 187 Squads. Notable individuals include Danny Harrison who finished 7th out of 210 in his Intermediate Advanced Division and 4th highest score recorded by a Pennsylvania resident. Leah Bish finished 8th out of the 50 ladies that competed in Intermediate Advanced. She also recorded the highest ladies score by a Pennsylvania resident in her division. These youth have worked very hard this year to achieve these impressive results at a tournament that turned a gun club into a small city for about a week. The Clay Crushers currently only compete in the sporting clays at the National Championship which represents nearly 2000 of the competitors at this event the rest are competing in International & American Skeet & Trap, Handicap Trap Doubles Skeet and Trap and much more. The Castlewood Board of Directors would like to thank all of the Coaches, Families and the youth who participate in the Youth Shooting Programs at Castlewood Rod & Gun Club for their hard work and dedication to the sport and for being wonderful ambassadors for Castlewood. Four members of the Castlewood Clays Crushers traveled over five hours to participate in the World Sporting Clays Championship hosted in Pennsville, NJ. The event hosted over 2000 participants from across the globe and paid out nearly a quarter of a million dollars in prize money. These young men traveled with family members and made an impressive showing for the youth shooting program at Castlewood. We would like to congratulate these young men on their accomplishments and their participation. |
